Workshop: Mukluks with Gloria Beckman

Four-day Workshop. Participants must attend all four days.

Learn how to make your own pair of beaded, fur trimmed mukluks with artist Gloria Beckman. Taking place over four session, the workshop will also include a behind the scene experience that will allow you to view some of the Manitoba Museum s collection of mukluks and other footwear, with an artifact showcase and talk by Dr. Amelia Fay, Curator of the HBC Collection.

This workshop includes all the supplies you need to complete your mukluks, and each participant will receive their own supply kit; however, you are welcome to bring along your own supplies if you prefer.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch; light refreshments and snacks will be provided.

About the Artist

Gloria Beckman has been an instructor for many years, teaching moccasin and mukluk workshops for schools, in communities, and for the Manitobah Story Boot School. Spending many years working within Aboriginal language education within the province of Manitoba, Gloria believes in the importance of incorporating various components of cultures and traditions in language learning. Reflecting on the past few years teaching mukluks and moccasins, she says,  It has been uplifting to see the pride in the students  eyes while working on their beaded pahk kinaskisina/leather footwear. Students learning to make mukluks and moccasins connect with their cultural identity, stitch by stitch and bead by bead. Beading is a form of meditation that gives students a feeling of self-pride and accomplishment through their creations. An empowered human only wants the best for all humanity. The stories I have heard from people I ve met through teaching have given me hope for a better future as more walk away with an ancestral skill.
